Intermot: Kymco unveils maxi-scooter

KYMCO cracks the maxi-scooter market with the concept-turned-production AK550…
Three years after Taiwanese brand Kymco celebrated its 50th anniversary with the Super Touring K50 Concept, the newly named AK550 has been touted for production.
Looking every bit like the popular Yamaha TMAX which undoubtedly served as the new model's inspiration, the Taiwanese-made maxi-scoot is the firm's best-equipped two-wheeled production bike to date, as well as being its largest-capacity two-wheeler.
Powered by a liquid-cooled 550cc parallel-twin engine, it offers selectable engine modes suited to either dry or wet conditions and is capable of 54.4hp and 55Nm of torque.
The engine, which is matched to a CVT transmission, is mounted within a hollow and lightweight cast-aluminium chassis. The AK550 is suspended on a 41mm upside-down fork at the front and a horizontally mounted offset monoshock at the rear, while braking is by way of a radial-mounted twin-disc Brembo affair equipped with Bosch's 9.1 ABS system.
As well as LED lights all round, including daytime running lights flanking the dual headlight, the new scoot features a two-way adjustable windscreen and a keyless ignition. It tips the scales at 226kg, has a seat height of 785mm and claimed underseat storage sufficient to hold both a full- and open-face helmet at the same time.
