Indian Motorcycle, under the stewardship of Polaris since April, 2011, has announced details of its new Thunder Stroke 111 engine that will power the 2014 model machine.
The new engine was publicly unveiled on March 9 at Daytona Bike Week and features a 111 cubic inch (hence, the name…) 49-degree, air-cooled V-twin, delivering 155.9Nm of torque. There’s certainly an air of familiarity for Indian-philes, with parallel pushrod tubes, finned heads, down firing exhausts and left-side air intake. There’s also a six-speed overdrive gearbox.
The Thunder Stroke 111 is built in Osceola, Wisconsin at Polaris’ engine assembly plant, with future full unit motorcycle assembly taking place in Polaris’ production facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
“Everyone involved in the design of this motorcycle line understands that we are the stewards and caretakers of one of America’s most storied and legendary brands,” said Polaris Industries Vice President of Motorcycles, Steve Menneto.
“We’ve worked tirelessly to retain the truly iconic characteristics of the brand and combine those elements with advanced technologies to deliver a new Indian Motorcycle offering exceptional performance and truly unsurpassed reliability.
“The new Thunder Stroke 111 engine delivers what riders are looking for, and we expect that Indian Motorcycle fans will be inspired by this legendary new power plant as we accelerate toward our full launch in the months ahead.”
Meanwhile, Indian Motorcycle has revealed a custom-built streamliner named the “Spirit of Munro.”, powered by the Thunder Stroke 111. The streamliner was also unveiled at Daytona Bike Week in honour of Burt Munro’s, “Munro Special,” the historic 1920 Indian Scout that broke the under-1000cc land-speed record in 1967 at the Bonneville Salt Flats as famously portrayed in the motion picture “The World’s Fastest Indian.”
The streamliner was designed from the ground up to house the Thunder Stroke 111 engine, and a custom exhaust and intake system is mated with a chain drive conversion to allow for the tall gearing necessary for top speed runs.
