The Melbournbe-based International Entertainment Group (IEG) has been appointed as the new promoter of the Australian Supercross Championship.
The new deal will see IEG, which already runs the Australian Superbike Championship, sign on as promoter through to 2014, with an option to extend.
“IEG has a proven record of delivering major motorcycle sport events in Australia, and we are confident it will once again deliver excellent results," said Motorcycling Australia's CEO, David White. “We look forward to seeing IEG’s vision for the championship translate on the track over the coming three years."
The Managing Director of IEG, Yarrive Konsky, said he was looking forward to the supercross challenge.
“IEG is committed to making supercross work; we believe in the brand and its worth,” he said. “IEG is excited by this great opportunity to expand our business. Supercross the brand is well recognised; we will make it more affordable and more accessible to riders, sponsors and spectators."
The appointment gives the sport another reprieve, and a further chance at securing a stable future in this country. Supercross and motocross ace Chad Reed breathed new life into the discipline in 2008, forming the revitalised SuperX series with promoter Global Action Sports (GAS), but after a promising start the venture finally faltered. Reed backed out, while GAS eventually announced its withdrawal from the code in February of this year, citing poor attendance figures and unsustainable losses.
IEG is of course well aware of the Australian Supercross Championship's chequered history, but with the considerable experience of promoting the Australian Superbike Championship -- and other major events -- behind it, it's well placed to give the code every chance at success.
The 2012 Australian Supercross Championship will be run over four rounds from September to November, with dates and details for the individual fixtures to be released in coming weeks.
