Hyosung Australia has promised we will be seeing a couple of new single-cylinder motorcycles by the end of 2013, and this X-5 streetfighter could be one of them.
First unveiled at the 2012 Intermot motorcycle fair in Cologne, the X-5’s function is all about mass centralisation and compactness, although a weight hasn’t yet been divulged by the Korean company.
The angular X-5 has a tubular steel frame, short 1340mm wheelbase, and the fuel tank, located near the centre of gravity (which has necessitated the lateral mounted monoshock) is plastic for a further weight saving. Seat height is 780mm.
The suspension comprises a 37mm upside-down fork and the aforementioned monoshock, which pivots directly onto the aluminium swingarm. There’s only preload adjustment on the rear.
The fuel-injected engine is 249cc with a bore and stroke of 73 x 59.6mm, with power and torque still closely guarded secrets.
According to Hyosung Australia marketing manager Mark Berger, the “X-5 is a version of something we expect to become available”, but he couldn’t go into specifics of timing, costing, final spec and whether an Aussie version will even stick with the X-5 moniker.
A faired version of the X-5 is also expected in Australia, with both bikes to retail for less than the current Hyosung quarter-litre, 75-degree twins: the GT250 naked, fully faired GT250R and GV250 Aquila cruiser.
