Husqvarna debuts off-road ABS

Husky goes boldly where no brand has gone before

Husqvarna will be the first manufacturer to debut Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) on a production off-road racebike when the new TE 449 hits the marketplace.

Stemming from the parent company BMW’s experienced know-how, the system will be restricted to front-wheel use only, allowing the rider to still lock the rear – a necessity in off-road racing.

“Due to the particular dynamic requirements of off-road racing, ABS regulation occurs solely at the front wheel”, Husqvarna says. “The rear wheel brake is not regulated, so the rider can deliberately lock the rear wheel.”

The twin-channel system adds just 1.5kg to the overall weight of the machine uses two wheels sensors to monitor the associated speeds of both wheels, a
hydraulic system, a pressure modulator and a new engine control unit (ECU).

Husqvarna says that the twin-channel system will easily allow for future development for enduro machines which travel both on and off-road.

“For example, it would conceivable to provide two ABS modes for off-road and on-road use, activated separately by the rider, with ABS regulation of the rear-wheel brake for travelling on the road,” it said.

The dual channel system of the Husqvarna Motorcycles Off-Road ABS also offers considerable potential for further development.
