Honda HRC has confirmed that Hunter Lawrence will move up to the premier class for the 2024 AMA Supermotocross Championship.
The Australian rider will race alongside his younger brother and teammate Jett Lawrence in the 450 class for the Supermotocross season, which consists of the AMA Supercross and AMA Pro Motocross championships.
Lawrence joined the Honda HRC team as a 250 class rider in 2021. He had his best season to date in 2023, winning the AMA Supercross 250SX East title and the Pro Motocross 250 title. He also helped Australia to second place at the Motocross of Nations in France.
“I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished in my 250 career, but it’s exciting to move up to the premier class for 2024,” Lawrence said. “I feel like my style is well-suited for the CRF450RWE, and off-season testing has been going well so far. I enjoyed battling with Jett in the 250 class before he moved up, and I’m looking forward to doing that again now that we’re both on the big bike.”
The departure of 450 rider Chase Sexton to Red Bull KTM has opened the door for Lawrence to step up to the premier class. Jett was elevated to the 450 class for the 2023 Pro Motocross season and went on to win every moto, gifting him the championship and a “perfect season”.
Now the two brothers will be battling each other for the various titles on offer, while Jo Shimoda will take Hunter’s spot in the 250 class, switching from Pro Circuit Kawasaki to the HRC team. Chance Hymas is Honda’s other 250 rider.
The 2024 AMA Supercross season kicks off at Anaheim 1 on January 7.
