From the Australian GP corp: With just three more races until the Australian leg of the 2007 MotoGP World Championship hits town, organisers today released details of plans to expand grandstand capacity at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
"The blistering on-track performances of Casey Stoner and Chris Vermeulen have created a massive groundswell of interest in the 2007 GMC MotoGP," said Drew Ward, CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.
"We've said all along that we'll review our grandstand build and cater to demand where necessary. With our present grandstand ticket offering almost full to capacity, we are delighted to announce that we will be extending each of the four grandstands for the October 12 - 14 race."
The new release of tickets will see grandstand capacity increased by almost 40 per cent on the total number of seats available for the 2006 race.
Other figures released today show:
* Sales of grandstand tickets are 153 per cent up on the same time last year
* Sales of grandstand tickets have already exceeded total grandstand ticket sales for 2006
* Sales of VIP hospitality tickets are 45 per cent up on the same time last year
* Sales of VIP hospitality tickets have already exceeded total VIP hospitality ticket sales for 2006
* Sales of general admission tickets are 171 per cent up on the same time last year
* Sales of campground sites are 116 per cent up on the same time last year
"Not since the glory days of Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan more than a decade ago have we seen such attention focussed on the Grand Prix," said Mr Ward. "As the momentum continues to build, you get a feeling that this year is going to offer the sort of racing that legends are made of. We will continue to monitor sales of all our ticket offerings and review our services and facilities to meet the demand."
MotoGP fans planning to spend the weekend down at Phillip Island are advised to take care of their accommodation plans early. The Phillip Island Information Centre offers free advice and can be contacted on 1300 366 422.
For those seeking the ultimate MotoGP experience the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit boasts its very own campground facilities. A general store, shower blocks and other facilities are all included.
The easiest, most relaxing way to get to and from the Island is to 'Catch-a-Coach'. Once again, AGPC suggests early booking for this service which operates from Melbourne City, Monash University, Cranbourne, Geelong and Ballarat.
The 2007 GMC Australian Motorcycle takes place at Phillip Island from 12 - 14 October.
