New motorcycle sales have continued to grow, with 2021 sales increasing by 51 per cent from the same period last year according to the latest figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industry (FCAI).
The previous year saw an unexpected boom in sales following the outbreak of COVID-19 and the figures have continued to rise in the first three months of 2021.
Total sales from January to March 2021 were 27,256 units – an increase of 9279 units and 51.6 per cent from the same period in 2020.

Road bike sales increased by 20.9 per cent, with 8684 units sold so far in 2021, while off-road sales continued to boom with an increase of 88.9 per cent and 11,642 units sold.
The off-highway veichle segment, which includes ATVs and UTVs, grew by 57.2 per cent, with 5455 units sold. This growth could possibly be a result of the new quad bike safety regulations, which were partly introduced in October 2020.
Scooter sales are also up in 2021, with a 26.9 per cent increase and 1475 units sold in the first part of 2021.
“The results are clearly reinforcing the view that motorbikes, scooters and OHVs are continuing to be a favoured mobility choice across the country,” according to FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber. “It also reflects a growing confidence in the economy as people use their disposable income to either upgrade or by a motorcycle for the first time.
“The big increase in off road motorcycles also suggests that the changed social environment brought about by COVID 19 has encouraged many people to look to this area as a positive form of recreation,” he said.
Individual sales figures for make and model are no longer published by the FCAI, and are not available to the media or general public.
