Hook stars and then hits a snag

Dramatic Red Bull Rookies opener in Spain

A sensational start to the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup season at Jerez in Spain saw Sturla Fagerhaug claim victory -- even though he crashed heavily and was half a lap behind the leading pack.

The 17-year-old Norwegian benefited from a restart following a two-rider crash and pulled through to win an incredible six-lap race ahead of Mathew Scholtz and Danny Kent, with Australia's Josh Hook in fifth - just 0.646secs behind Fagerhaug.

However, the meeting turned sour for Hook when he crashed in Sunday's less dramatic race two, which was won by Danny Kent from Fagerhaug and polesitter Daijiro Hiura.

Fagerhaug was passed by Kent in a typical Jerez last-corner braking move.

Of the other Australians, Dylan Mavin scored 18-12 results, while former junior speedway star Arthur Sissis was 18th in race two after he was a DNF in the opener.

Fagerhaug leads on 45pts from Kent (41), Scholtz (29), Alejandro Pardo (21) and Jakub Kornfeil (18). Hook is 11th on 11pts.
