Honda has confirmed that the Crosstourer V-four adventure bike, unveiled as a concept at the 2010 EICMA show, will now go into mass production, creating a machine that’s plainly gunning for models such as BMW’s R 1200 GS, the Moto Guzzi Stelvio, Yamaha's XTZ1200 Super Tenere and – we surmise – the new model on the way from Triumph.
Honda’s current big-bore adventure tourer is the XL1000V Varadero – a bike powered by the competent but ageing V-twin first seen in the VTR1000 Firestorm. The current Varadero has remained essentially unchanged since its last major revision some seven years ago, so a replacement model is well and truly due.
The Crosstourer will utilise the same powerplant as the VFR1200 to bring the benefits of this world-beating engine to a new type of customer,” says Honda. “This will be the first time an adventure tourer has been fitted with a compact and powerful V-four engine,” it adds.
Like the VFR1200F, the Crosstourer will also be offered with the option of Honda’s second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission technology
Elsewhere, the Crosstourer will stick to the modern adventure tourer theme -- long-travel suspension, upright ride position, good luggage carrying ability and spoked wheels – although we are not sure if it will be shod with road-based tyres or a block pattern adventure hoop such as the Bridgestone Trail Wing.
Yosuke Hasegawa, leader of the Crosstourer development team said: “The Crosstourer offers a high-level fusion of vibrant off-road styling, upright riding position, V engine power and Dual Clutch Transmission that offers more direct power transmission and easy operation.
“We are convinced that we have successfully brought out new value in what can be termed the true crossover concept.”
The bike will be on the Honda stand at 2011 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan from November 8-13.
