Honda sold the most motorcycles in 2019, with a 23.3 per cent share of the market. It sold 20,819 units, slightly more than Yamaha's 19,945 sales. Kawasaki was third with 8962 sales, while KTM (7670) and Suzuki (6,934) rounded out the top-five.
The 2019 figures released by the federal chamber of Automotive Industry (FCAI) also showed that motorcycles sales in Australia were down 6.1 per cent from 2018. Total sales reached 89,199.
The Yamaha WR450F was the biggest selling road-legal bike, with 1206 sales, up 6.2% from 2018. Fun bikes claimed the top five places in overall motorcycle sales, with the CRF50F notching 2052 sales.
The Honda CB125E was the biggest selling road bike with 1013 sales, while the Kawasaki Ninja 400 and the Yamaha MT-07 rounded out the top three.
Off-road motorcycles were the most popular category with a 38.5 per cent share of the market, while road bikes accounted for 35.8 per cent. ATV/SSV’s claimed a solid 20.1 per cent and scooters took a 5.6 per cent share.
Road bike sales dropped 11.9 per cent from 2018, with Harley-Davidson topping the category ahead of Honda and Yamaha. Husqvarna (up 24.2%) and KTM (up 18.3%) improved dramatically from 2018.
Yamaha was the highest off-road seller, with Honda and KTM following. The off-road segment dropped 1.6 per cent from 2018. Honda, Husqvarna and Kawasaki were the only brands to record an increase in off-road sales.
In the ATV/SSV category, Polaris took the honours with Honda in second and Yamaha in third, but Kawasaki was the only brand to record an increase from 2018.
Scooters were up 15.9 per cent, with Honda, Suzuki and Vespa selling the most. Scooters were the only category to post an increase in sales.
