
Honda sold a whopping 16,790,000 motorcycles – including ATVs – in 2013, which is an 8.7 per cent rise on 2012.
The biggest market was Asia and Oceania, which accounted for 12,960,000 sales (up 10.7 per cent), ahead of South America (1,657,000, up 0.2), China (1,351,000, up five), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (323,000, down 5.2) and North America (278,000, up 5.5).
Other than Europe, Japan was the only other market to contract, down 1.2 per cent with 221,000 sales.
Global production continued the recent trend, with Japan down 25.1 per cent to 137,000 units, while Honda’s overseas factories pumped out 17,074,000 units, up 8.5 per cent.
Meanwhile, Harley-Davidson's global sales grew and 4.4 per cent in 2013, helping it to post a fourth-quarter net income of $75.4 million, up from $70.6 million a year ago.
For the full year, Harley's profit rose 17.6 per cent to just under $734 million. Revenue was $5.26 billion.
Harley predicted strong growth in global motorcycle shipments for 2014, up 7 per cent to 9 per cent to a range of 279,000 to 284,000.
First-quarter shipments are expected to be 76,500 to 81,500, up from 75,222 a year earlier. Harley expects capital spending this year of $215 million to $235 million.
