Honda's new all-rounder, the VFR1200FA, has hit Australian shores, with the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer spruiking three key design elements: mass centralisation, consummate rider control and aerodynamic efficiency.
The VFR1200FA's V-four engine measures 1237cc (81mm x 60mm bore and stroke), and utilises the UNICAM single overhead camshaft design from the CRF motocrossers.
Also borrowed from the CRF range and the RC211V MotoGP racer is the sealed crankcase system that reduces the pumping loss created through piston movement and air density. This system has never been used on a road machine before but the gains for the rider are identical -- electrifying throttle response and improved fuel consumption.
There's a Symmetrically Coupled Phase-shift Crankshaft (S.C.P.C.) with a mere 28-degree crankpin offset. So, no counterbalancer required.
Fuel duties are handled by throttle-by-wire technology, and a slipper clutch is fitted to the six-speed transmission, similar to the one on the CBR1000RR Fireblade.
We won't see the dual clutch automatic transmission version of the VFR until July, with price still to be announced.
There are four 44mm throttle bodies, each with a single 12-hole injector spraying fuel.
Maximum claimed power is 171hp (128kW) at 10,000rpm, and 129Nm at 8750rpm, all designed to "provide its rider with high speed, quick acceleration and a strong, engaging feeling.
Honda's media release continued: "Its linear torque curve is focused in the low and mid-range, making it possible for the rider to simply roll on and off the throttle while powering through bends. This effortless control makes for a sportsbike with real-world usable power."
The engine is claimed to produce more than 80 percent of its maximum torque (115.3Nm) at 3000rpm.
The bike is cushioned by a 43mm upside-down cartridge forks with adjustable preload, and a Pro Arm single-sided swingarm with preload and rebound adjustment. It has an aluminium twin-spare frame.
Spent gases are emitted via an asymmetrical-length exhaust system between the front and rear cylinders, said to "boost power production and enhance power feel."
Seat height is 815mm, ground clearance 130mm, and kerb weight (ready to ride is 267kg) for the base model.
Multi-spoke (five on the front, seven on the rear) die-cast aluminium wheels are graced with Dunlop rubber.
The VFR1200FA is also equipped with a combined braking system and light weight ABS, and Honda claims it's the first motorcycle to feature ergonomic revisions to the handlebar and switch layout, resulting in reversed horn and indicator controls. The indicator switch shape is designed around natural thumb movement for effortless operation.
A wide range of accessories are available including a 29lt pannier kit, 31lt top box, three-position adjustable screen and 12 DVC plug.
The VFR1200FA is available in candy prominence red or seal silver metallic and is now available from Honda dealers nationally.
