Honda has revealed a new automatic clutch control system for manual motorcycle transmissions, claiming it is a world-first for the motorcycle industry.
The Japanese firm pioneered the dual-clutch transmission for motorcycles, however the new Honda E-Clutch system offers an automatic solution for a regular transmission.
E-Clutch uses electronic control to provide optimal clutch operation that is apparently more natural than a rider is capable of manually. The system allows for smooth starting, shifting, and stopping, without the need for the rider to operate the clutch lever.
The technology provides instantaneous, fine-tuned clutch control for optimum performance in situations where the driving force changes.
In comparison, dual clutch transmission works by using a hydraulic 2-clutch system to ensure the next gear is already engaged, preventing the need for a clutch lever.
The E-Clutch system still allows for normal clutch operation, which Honda says will help cater for a diverse range of riding experience and skills.
Honda also says that the lightweight and compact system can be installed without major changes to any existing engine layouts, while it plans to apply the technology to its minibike models over time.
