Honda passes 400 million-unit milestone

The Japanese manufacturer has produced 400 million units since it first began motorcycle production in 1949

Honda has produced 400 million units since it first introduced the Dream D-Type in 1949. The Japanese manufacturer passed the milestone in December, also celebrating the 70th anniversary of mass-production of motorcycles.

Founded in 1948, Honda began motorcycle production outside of Japan for the first time in 1963 when it set up a factory in Belgium. It reached the 10 million-unit milestone in 1968 and cracked 100 million units in 1997.

Since then, the growth in production has been rapid with the 200 million mark being passed 2008 and the 300 million mark being passed in 2014. Honda also achieved 20 million units annually for the first time in 2018.

“For 70 years, Honda has provided customers worldwide with motorcycles that make life easier and more enjoyable,” said Takahiro Hachigo, the CEO of Honda Motor Co. “As a result, we have achieved our 400 million-unit milestone and we will continue to do our best to provide attractive products that meet the needs and dreams of our customers worldwide.”

Honda currently produces motorcycles from 50cc commuters to 1800cc models at 35 facilities in 21 countries.
