Honda expands capacity in India -- again

Another motorcycle and scooter plant has opened this week, as the company aims to sell a staggering 3.9 million units over the next financial year

Honda has continued to expand its production capacity in India – now the world’s largest manufacturer of powered two wheelers – by inaugurating another factory as part of its plan to increase capacity to 4.6 million units by March, 2014.

According to a report in The Business Standard, the new plant at Narasapur Industrial Area, about 60km from Bangalore, will produce 1.2 million units to begin with, with the company adding a third assembly line over the next year which will add another 600,000 capacity.

The Dream Yuga motorcycle (pictured) and Activa scooter will be produced at the new facility, cutting down lead times for customers significantly. Doesn’t sound like a big deal, but there are presently 100,000 people waiting for delivery of the Activa in India...

During 2012-2013, Honda India recorded 31 per cent growth in sales and sold 2.6 million two wheelers.
