While many of his rivals coughed and spluttered, Port Macquarie rider Chris Hollis has produced a beautifully consistent campaign to win the 2011 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC).
The final day of action was held at Dungog (NSW) on Saturday, October 1, with Hollis completing the championship on 184pts, ahead of Yamaha teammates Stefan Merriman and Matt Phillips.
It was Hollis’ second AOR crown, after first winning in 2008.
“I’ve had a really consistent year,” Hollis said. “I didn’t win one race all year. I came second a lot, but I guess that’s what counts.
“I’m looking forward to next year being even bigger and better.”
As well as outright honours, Hollis also won the E2 class on 206pts ahead of deadlocked Husqvarna pair Glenn Kearney (168) and Bartosz Obluki (168); in E1 the top three was Merriman (219), Ben Grabham (KTM, 178) and Luka Bussa (Husqvarna, 158); and E3 saw KTM’s Jarrod Bewley (207) get the job done ahead of Phillips (194) and Geoff Braico (Husaberg, 166).
Bewley was also fourth outright.
“The final round’s conditions were tough and very slippery, which tested all of the riders’ abilities on the weekend,” Bewley said. “I was happy to get the class win, which was one goal that I achieved for the year.
“Fourth overall is good considering the depth in the field, although of course I would have liked to finish higher. I had a consistent year, but I’ll be training harder and focusing even more for next year.”
Dual AORC champion Toby Price (KTM) was forced to sit out the season finale as he recovers from arm surgery, ultimately finishing the year eighth in the E2 standings and ninth outright .
Details of the 2012 Australian Off-Road Championship will be released over the coming months.
