Holder wins fifth title

The 2014 Australian Speedway Championship was won by Holder in a cliff-hanger final round, with rival Jason Doyle left to lick his wounds

Chris Holder has won his fifth Australian Supercross Championship in Gillman (SA) on Saturday, January 11, but not before an almighty scare from Jason Doyle.

After dominating the heats, Doyle was battling for the lead with Holder in the A-final before his bike locked up, flexed and then catapulted the Newcastle rider straight into the turn four air fence. After a few minutes, Doyle got to his feet and trundled back to the pits – his bike bent and his title hopes extinguished.

With Doyle excluded from the rerun, Holder only had to stay upright to guarantee title No. 5, with Rohan Tungate the winner and Mason Campton third.

“I’m rapt to come away with a win; it’s been a long six months to get back from injury,” said Holder. “I wanted to use it as a stepping stone to get going. I had some tough nights, I battled through and finished in the top two in all three rounds. I’m really happy with that.

“It was a shame Doyley came off, because it was shaping up to be a great race. I feel a bit sorry that it played out that way. He was the man of the series, the quickest guy but I’m sure he’ll be back on it next year for sure.

“I’ll take this one; I’ve had my knocks too.  It’s always good to be the Aussie champion.”

Doyle was gracious in defeat.

“It wasn’t a fairytale ending, I tried my hardest over the three rounds, it just didn’t end up the way I wanted it to,” he said. “When you’ve got Chris behind you, you’ve got to be doing something special.
He’s just a champion isn’t he?”
