Australia’s Chris Holder has produced a sizzling late charge to win the European SPG at Leszno in Poland, round two of the 2012 world championship.
Holder showed no ill effects from a huge domestic league crash a week before, winning the final ahead of local heroes Tomasz Gollob and Jaroslaw Hampel, with Swede Andreas Jonsson fourth. It was Holder’s third SGP win, with his first coming at Cardiff in 2010.
Holder also won his semi-final from Jonsson, with Hampel and Gollob going 1-2 in the other – eliminating Australia’s Jason Crump from proceedings in the process.
Earlier, Crump was one of the strongest riders in the heats, wining two of his five rides.
Hampel (33pts) now moves into the championship lead at the expense of reigning world champion Greg Hancock, who won the first round in New Zealand last month. Hancock bowed out of Leszno proceedings at the same juncture as Crump.
Gollob sits alongside Hancock on 31pts, and then it’s Crump (24), Holder (23) and Nicki Pedersen (23).
Round three of the championship will be held in Prague on May 12.
