Holder ripe for SGP action

The 2012 world speedway title resumes in Poland on April 28, and Australian Chris Holder is still a confirmed starter after a recent huge crash
Australia’s Chris Holder goes into the European Speeedway Grand Prix (SGP) in Poland on April 28 on the back of a dramatic domestic league crash last Sunday, which saw Polish international Piotr Protasiewicz straighten up and send the Aussie flying over the handlebars like a ragdoll.
Amazingly, Holder just walked away with few shoulder pains and a sore backside, rather than any broken bones, and he was thanking his lucky stars he is fit to take his place in Leszno on Saturday night.
Holder was quoted as saying in the Bournemouth Daily Echo: “I was in front and had just come round the corner. The track had a few ruts in it and that guy (Protasiewicz) just went for the inside and hit a few ruts.
“The worst thing was I wasn’t ready for it because I didn’t see it coming and, the next thing I knew, I was going up over the handlebars and all over the place. It scared me a bit, to be honest, but I was just happy I landed in one piece.
“I went into the fence with my legs first which is always the best way to go into it, rather than with your head first. But I think I was pretty lucky to get away with it.
“Usually, when you have a pretty nasty one and hit the ground quite hard, you break a collarbone or something really easy. I did hurt my shoulder so I was surprised I was able to walk away. It was probably the biggest crash I have had for a while.”
Holder is currently a lowly 14th in the 2012 SGP standings after a lean season opener in New Zealand last month.
Reigning world champion Greg Hancock leads after round one, ahead of Jaroslaw Hampel, Tomasz Gollob, Nicki Pedersen, Antonio Lindback and Australia’s Jason Crump.
