Chris Holder has fought back from a disastrous opening to score a stirring victory in round two of the 2014 Australian Speedway Championship at Undera Park, near Shepparton (Vic) on Wednesday, January 8.
Holder only managed to scramble three points out of his opening three rides, and just when it looked like he would finish well down the table – he was even on his second bike after mechanical problems with his number one machine – he managed to scrape into the B-final.
He then cleaned up in that one before lining up in the A-final against Troy Batchelor, Jason Doyle and Justin Sedgmen. However, the race didn’t last its full distance on the first attempt after Batchelor inadvertently t-boned Holder, sending both down hard while both Doyle and Sedgmen managed to avoid the carnage.
Batchelor was first on his feet, but Holder took longer to compose himself after the big shunt. Just when it seemed like his night was over, Holder then declared that he would contest the re-run – minus Batchelor, who was excluded.
Holder’s two bikes were eventually crafted into one, and he then won the crash-free re-run from Doyle and Sedgmen.
With one round remaining, in Gillman (SA) on January 11, Holder and Doyle are deadlocked on 38pts ahead of Batchelor (32), Josh Grajczonek (29), Cam Woodward (29), Sedgmen (27), Rohan Tungate (24) and Sam Masters (23).
