Crankt Protein Honda Racing Team’s Troy Herfoss has captured the 2016 Yamaha Motorcycle Insurance Australian Superbike Championship, his 2-1 results at the Winton (Vic) finale proving to be too much for his Yamaha rivals Glenn Allerton and Wayne Maxwell.
Herfoss completed the six-round championship on 255pts from Allerton (238) and Maxwell (235).
"I am just really proud to win this championship for Honda," said Herfoss. "Glenn and Wayne both fight so hard all the time on the track; it’s so intense with those guys.
"The season has just been such a rollercoaster for me, and I have been riding at 110 per cent the whole time."
While Herfoss enjoyed a stellar final round, Allerton (8-2) and Maxwell (4-DNF) couldn't sustain the pressure. Instead, it was their Yamaha teammate Cru Halliday who showed the best form by winning race one on the YZF-R1M, and then was fifth in race two.
In his return to domestic racing, Josh Waters was superb with 3-4 finishes in the 17-lap races on his Custom Plates-backed Yamaha. Another privateer, Brayden Elliot (Suzuki GSX-R1000), was also impressive with a third place in race two.
Halliday was fourth in the championship on 165pts, from Mike Jones (Ducati, 163).
The supersport title was won by Troy Guenther (Yamaha, 239pts) ahead of Sam Clarke (Kawasaki, 231) and Luke Mitchell (Yamaha, 218).
