Crankt Protein Honda Racing’s Troy Herfoss produced a brilliant weekend of racing in round five of the 2016 Australian Superbike Championship at Morgan Park, Qld) on August 6-7, winning both races from pole position ahead of Yamaha's Wayne Maxwell.
With his bonus point for pole position also thrown into the mix, Herfoss collected 51pts at Morgan Park, and is now just seven behind Maxwell heading into the final round at Winton, Vic from September 30 until October 2. Maxwell's teammate Glenn Allerton also remains in the championship hunt, 4pts behind Herfoss.
MORGAN PARK RESULTS AND STANDINGS
With five-time world 500 GP champion Mick Doohan looking on, Herfoss was peerless as he won both 19-lap races by over three seconds on the CBR1000RR SP.
“I can’t really describe the feeling I have right now. I’ve been racing a long time but to get a perfect weekend like we have is just so cool,” Herfoss said. “Even eating my lunch today, I carried the porridge from the microwave, dropped it, it did three little flips and then landed perfectly, so I knew it was my day.
“Every lap on the track today I felt so good, and the Pirelli tyres were fantastic out there. I keep saying it, but the team has worked so hard on this bike, and even though it’s older it really is just so nice to ride.
“Now I know we’re going to Winton with a really good chance of winning, so I definitely needed these extra points this weekend and the hard work has certainly paid off.”
In race one, Herfoss and Maxwell were followed home by impressive privateer Daniel Falzon (Yamaha), and in the second Cru Halliday (Yamaha) finished in the top three.
Meanwhile, it was a disaster for DesmoSport Ducati’s Mike Jones, with the defending champion felled by mechanical problems. Jones is now sitting equal fourth in the standings alongside Falzon.
In supersport, Luke Mitchell (Yamaha) was the overall winner, but Sam Clarke (Kawaski) held onto the championship lead. Clarke leads Troy Guenther (Yamaha) by 8pts ahead of the Winton finale.
