Herfoss doubles up at Wakefield Park

A clean sweep at the second round of the 2019 Australian Superbike Championship, as the defending champion rockets up the standings

Penrite Honda Racing rider and reigning champion Troy Herfoss clean swept round two of the 2019 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn (NSW) on Sunday, March 24.

Herfoss, 32, a Goulburn native, started from third on the grid and put on a stellar display in both premier class outings to set a new lap record a produce a perfect 1-1 scorecard, promoting himself to second in the standings after two of seven rounds.

Cru Halliday (Yamaha), who had 2-2 results at Wakefield Park, leads the championship on 96pts ahead of Herfoss (91), Mike Jones (Kawasaki/Ducati, 83), Josh Waters (Suzuki, 80), Wayne Maxwell (Suzuki, 73) and Bryan Staring (Kawasaki, 73).

Troy Herfoss continued his Wakefield Park domination

In the opening 20-lap race, Herfoss won by 1.189 seconds over Halliday, with Maxwell third ahead of Daniel Falzon (Yamaha), Jones (Ducati), Waters, Staring and Alex Phillis (Suzuki).

Herfoss couldn’t be touched in a shortened race two to secure another win, which was red-flagged at the 13-lap mark and ultimately declared by officials. Halliday and Jones completed the podium from Maxwell, Falzon, Waters, Matt Walters (Kawasaki) and Staring.

Herfoss wins race one from Halliday and Maxwell

“Today was so, so much fun,” Herfoss stated. “The new qualifying format this weekend with Q2 being really short made it quite intense and I really enjoyed it doing a PB lap of 57.1s for third on the grid. I knew it was going to be a tough two races, but I knew I was the only one who had done a long run on the race tyre.

“It was a really solid pace at the start of race one, but thankfully I was able to make a few passes throughout race and pulled a bit of gap towards the end. I’m sorry to see a rider go down in race two and see the race stopped halfway, but for me it was so much fun to get out front, get a hole-shot and put my head down.”

Tom Toparis (Yamaha) won both supersport races – and now has four wins from four starts in 2019 – and the supersport 300 races were won by Max Stauffer and John Lytras.

Round three of 2019 Australian Superbike Championship will be held from April 26-28 at The Bend Motorsport Park (SA).
