Herfoss and Hook a class above

Honda duo Troy Herfoss and Josh Hook have claimed a win and second place apiece in the opening round of the 2015 Australian Superbike Championship at Phillip Island on Sunday, February 22.

Both races were cliff-hangers, with Hook defeating Herfoss in the opening eight-lapper, before the tables were turned in the second 12-lapper. Kawasaki rider Mike Jones was third in both races, which also counted towards points in the 2015 Phillip Island Championship.

Hook now departs for Japan to race in its national championship, while Herfoss will continue to campaign domestically alongside Jamie Stauffer, who is now convalescing after he crashed out in Saturday's aborted superbike race one and sustained a broken pelvis.

Linden Magee (BMW) was fourth in both races, with Daniel Falzon (Yamaha) and New Zealander Sloan Frost (BMW) sharing the fifth places.

In the Aussie supersport title, New South Wales rider Michael Blair (Yamaha) claimed the double from Callum Spriggs (Yamaha, 2-2) and Ryan Taylor (Yamaha, 5-4).

In the other two Aussie championship classes at Phillip Island (but non-Phillip Island Championship status), Red Bull Rookies rider Olly Simpson dominated Moto2/125 GP category on his KTM, winning all three races from Matt Barton (Honda, 2-2-2) and Ted Collins (Honda, 4-6-3), and in the junior 150cc junior title Dylan Whiteside (Honda, 1-1-1) was the star. The junior 80cc class was clean swept by Honda's Jack Mahaffy.

The second and final round of the 2015 Phillip Island Championship will be held at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from October 16-18, while the Australian Superbike Championship continues at Morgan Park in Queensland from April 10-12.
