If you live in a remote area crawling with law-breaking bandits, not to mention a lack of refuelling infrastructure, this could be the motorcycle for you.
Originally developed for the US military, the civilian version of the Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT) M1030-M2 LE 670 is based on the Kawasaki KLR650 but features a number of augmentations that provide it with a certain 'Mad Max' appeal, if you will.
For instance the HDT M1030 motorcycle features blackout lighting, which makes it hard to spot at night, an infrared driving light can also be optioned and all surfaces are non-reflective. Yes, it's a stealth bike.
It's also got a cruising range of more than 650km (at a speed of 90km/h) thanks to an enlarged 14lt fuel tank, and here's the kicker – it can run on seven different types of fuel.
And this includes diesel, which would be handy in a place like Australia where diesel is often cheaper than petrol and long distance travel is commonplace.
The single-cylinder liquid-cooled four-stroke Kawasaki KLR650 engine has been significantly altered by HDT, with an increased capacity (670cc) and an ability to run on a number of different military fuel variants (JetA1, AVTUR, JP5, JP8 aviation kerosene, AVCAT), plus diesel and biodiesel.
Engine power depends on the quality of the fuel, but HDT reckons its ultra-rugged M1030 will crank out around 33hp (24kW), enough herbs for a top speed of around 150km/h.
Designed for extreme conditions and with reliability a prime concern, the HDT M1030 features numerous structural reinforcements - such as heavy duty wire-spoke alloy rims and a beefed up bash plate. It weighs 168kg.
It's waterproof, dust proof and has a fording depth of 610mm, but is only available in one colour (tan).
The civilian version of the Hayes Diversified Technologies M1030-M2 LE 670 motorcycle is priced at US$18,500 (A$20,000), and though it's not officially available just yet, there is a waiting list for interested buyers. Check out HDTUSA.com for more details on this hardcore unit.
