This is what happens when you cut loose some retired Harley engineers who've failed to do the dignified thing and take up golf: they band together, call themselves the Gray Eagles and start doing some very weird stuff in sheds.
Nick Hirsch, Dave Caruso and Karl Nilson, formerly of H-D, plus former Johnson (of outboard fame) tech head Don Kueny have banded together and developed a turbo diesel Harley-based big twin.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal (JSOnline.com), the crew has unveiled their first attempt at the configuration, which was initially intended as a project to prove the worth of such a powerplant to the military.
However one thing has led to another, and the group is confident they can get it performing better than a standard petrol engine and believe there may just be a market for such a machine.
"There's going to be a niche for diesel bikes. I would be very surprised if the Japanese aren't working on them now," Nilson said.
