Harley-Davidson has signed an agreement with Chinese company Zhejiang Qianjiang – the owner of historic Italian marque, Benelli – to develop sub-400cc motorcycles that will be sold under the H-D moniker in the world’s most populous nation.
The announcement, made on China’s stock exchange, outlined plans for two new 338cc Harley-Davidsons to go on sale in China by the end of 2020, with markets like Thailand, Indonesia and India also expected to receive the models.
“We’re excited about this opportunity to build more Harley riders in China, one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, by creating new pathways to our brand,” said Matt Levatich, president and CEO of Harley-Davidson.
It’s been a tough few years for Harley-Davidson, with a shrinking domestic market not helping its cause – and plans to move some production to Europe to beat harsh tariffs was met with a fierce riposte from US president Donald Trump.
Recent Harley-Davidson strategic moves have included closing an assembly plant in Missouri and beginning production in Thailand.
The Street 500, Harley-Davidson’s learner-approved machine, is also manufactured in India for all global markets other than North America.
Harley-Davidson wants to grow its international business to 50 percent of its annual volume by 2027.
