American legend Greg Hancock ended his sensational season in style by winning the rain-curtailed Speedway Grand Prix of Poland.
The action was halted with Hancock leading the score chart on 11pts after 16 races when heavy rain forced the FIM jury to declare an already damp circuit unfit for action.
But the wet stuff was not enough to put a damper on Hancock’s big night as he returned to the rostrum to collect his second world championship gold medal – 14 years after he claimed his first in 1997.
The 41-year-old was joined on the series podium by Swedish star Andreas Jonsson, who pipped Polish racer Jaroslaw Hampel to world championship silver by 2pts.
Australia’s Jason Crump finished the championship in fourth, three spots ahead of compatriot Chris Holder.
In Poland, Crump and another Aussie, wildcard Darcy Ward, were well on their way to semi-final action when the meeting was abandoned, with Holder just outside the top eight.
But based on points accumulated at the time, Dane Nicki Pedersen was second in Poland ahead of Russian Emil Sayfutdinov – who defeated outgoing world champion Tomasz Gollob on a countback.
