Ten years after its inaugural event, Australia will enter a team in the 2018 BMW Motorrad GS International Trophy and to determine the riders which will give the team the best chance of success, BMW Australia is hosting a national qualifier event in October 2017.
A long way from next year’s Trophy location of Mongolia, the qualifier will be held in Victoria’s Lima East on October 28-29, where riders will be tested on their technical skillset, aptitude and, since the GS Trophy is based entirely around teamwork, their ability to work with others.
As well as a physical test to assess fitness, would-be team members will be tested on their navigation and technical prowess as well as riding skills which need to include hill climbs, parallel log riding, water crossings, steep descents, deep sand passages and more — and all on a 250kg R1200GS.
The top three riders will earn a berth in the 2018 GS Trophy. The two highest placed female riders who qualify outside the top three will earn a berth in the South African-based qualifier event for the International GS Trophy Female Team.
It’s what BMW refers to as the greatest off-road challenge in the world and, while many may disagree, there’s is no doubt it will test even the toughest and most skilful off-road riders. For more information or to register for the event, head to bmwsafari.com.
