Rumours are swirling that Chinese automotive giant Great Wall Motor (GWM) is gearing up to unveil a Honda Goldwing rival complete with a flat-eight engine.
The approaching Beijing Automotive Exhibition (also known as Auto China) has provided fuel to the rumours, with some anticipating GWM will use that event for the reveal.
A series of patent images credited to GWM confirm that the company has designed a flat-eight engine similar to the flat-six engine of the iconic Goldwing tourer. According to US website Cycle World, the engine capacity could be around 2000cc, while it also believes GWM will utilise a dual-clutch transmission like Honda.
In addition, Cycle World published a screenshot that is supposedly from a social media video published by GWM’s billionaire chairman, Wei Jianjun. The image shows Wei walking past a covered motorcycle that looks very much like a tourer.
Cycle World believes that a pair of motorcycles are on the cards for GWM, with the Goldwing rival set to be joined by a more traditional cruiser (also with a flat-eight).
GWM produces vehicles under a few different brand names including Haval and Tank, so there is a good chance the new motorcycles will be sold under a dedicated brand name.
Further details remain a mystery, but it seems all could be revealed at the Auto China on April 25. We will be watching with great interest…
