Doctors in Japan have warned that men are at risk of impotence and urinary problems because of the vibration from motorcycles -- but it's not all doom and gloom.
The findings, published in the International Journal of Impotence Research (contact me if you want a subscription), suggest that seats on most motorcycles put undue pressure on the perineum, the area between the anus and the scrotum, and restrict blood flow to the penis.
Vibrations from the engine also caused a decrease in two growth hormones in the bladder and prostate related to bladder relaxation.
Local authorities have weighed into the argument too, with Impotence Australia chief executive officer Brett McCann quoted as saying that men should avoid sitting on hard bicycle or motorcycle seats, particularly seats with thin, pointed ends, for long periods to prevent compression of pelvic floor muscles.
Most motorcycle engines vibrate -- some more than others. Generally, the more cylinders the less vibration there is. The good news is that manufacturers use both gear and chain-driven counterbalancers to -- and this is no great surprise -- hit the vibes head on.
We'll keep you posted on further developments. In the meantime, keep riding and enjoying -- and take regular breaks.
Meanwhile, I'm intrigued to find out what sort of logo Impotence Australia uses...
