If you're making a list of venerable motorcycles, Honda's Gold Wing luxury titan of touring always cracks it for a mention – its one machine which continues to stand the test of time in what has been an incredible journey.
Of course, the Gold Wing has evolved with the times since its inception in 1975, and the current incarnation is impressive – a 1832cc flat six engine with 167Nm of caravan-pulling torque, a six-speaker surround-sound stereo, full navigation (on airbag model), reverse gear, heated seats and handlebars, cruise control, adjustable windscreen, gold star comfort for rider and passenger, and over 150 litres of luggage capacity. Sure makes long-haul travel enjoyable.
Now to mark 40 years of contrast Gold Wing manufacturing – first in America and now Japan - Honda has produced a 40th anniversary machine which will be available in an additional candy prominence red/graphite black paint option. Both colours are tied together, and separated, by a silver band inlaid with 40th anniversary emblems, and the bike is completed by blacked-out wheels, frame forks, swingarm and mufflers.
There are also commemorative key fobs and fairing/trunk badges, which will also be found on the three other Gold Wing colours: graphite black, pearl glare white and digital silver metallic (new for 2015).
Honda Australia has confirmed the 40th anniversary will go on sale locally in March 2015, with price and spec still to be announced.
