For the first time in three years the Honda 'Girls on the Gas' Competition has included the Northern Territory in its national calendar. Darwin played host this week to Round 2 of the Competition in stifling conditions that even had the locals searching for shade.
While the number of female riders in the Territory are down a tad compared to most other states in the country, the talent was certainly not lacking.
Local girl Melissa Holmes proved unstoppable on her Honda CRF 250 R, winning both of the 'On Bike' categories by a comfortable margin, while also winning the public speaking sector. A prior injury to her right knee proved the only chink in her armour with a second playing in the Fitness Test (Shuttle Run Beep Test).
"I've missed out the last couple of years with the 'Girls on the Gas' not coming to the Northern Territory but I was so happy when I heard we were on the calendar for 2008," said an ecstatic Holmes.
"I think the criteria for the competition is doing wonders for the professionalism of our sport and I'm so happy to have won. I look forward to testing myself against the other girls later in the year."
Second place overall on the day went to KTM rider Rhiannon Klein. Her best event was the fitness category where she scored a solid victory, following it up with top three performances in the remaining three categories.
Rounding out the podium for the day was Honda rider Michelle Rizzotto. Michelle scored consistently all day while netting herself a credible second placing in the 'On Bike Technique' category.
Round three of the Honda Girls on the Gas Competition heads to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia on the 3rdand 4th of May.
