Kirk Gibbs' 2015 MX Nationals campaign has got off to a majestic start with the KTM rider producing a superb clean sweep at round one in Horsham (Vic) on Sunday, March 29.
The current MX1 number two claimed the overall honours from Yamaha's Kade Mosig (3-2) and his KTM teammate Luke Styke (2-5), while it was a disappointing outing for reigning champion Matt Moss (Suzuki) who only left the Victorian township with a pair of 14th places – and already 36pts behind Gibbs.
"My preparation this year has been awesome," said Gibbs. "We all went to race in New Zealand and it's really paid off. I had a lot of confidence coming into this round so I'm really happy to take the win.
"My pa passed away a couple of weeks ago and I know he told my dad that he wanted me to win so this win today is for him."
Lawson Bopping (Yamaha, 4-4), Cody Cooper (Honda, 6-3) and Adam Monea (Kawasaki, 7-6) finished in positions 4-6.
In MX2, Yamaha's Jed Beaton (3-1) was the overall winner from teammate Luke Clout (1-4) and Takeshi Katsuya (Kawasaki, 2-3). Clout crossed the line in second in moto two but was handed a 10-second penalty for cutting the circuit and dropped two places.
“Today was a good day. I had a bad start in that first one and made a couple of mistakes, but I managed to sort myself out and I’m over the moon to be on the podium," said Beaton.
Yamaha-mounted Jordan Hill (Yamaha) won the opening MXD (under 19s) race, but the second race was abandoned after a crash that saw Dylan Wilson taken to hospital in a critical condition. Wilson (Yamaha) had earlier finished second in race one from Jayden Rykers (KTM).
