Gibbs takes outright, extends lead

The 2016 MX Nationals hit the sand of Western Australia for three gruelling races, and it was the defending champion who made the most of it

KTM's Kirk Gibbs has claimed outright spoils in the MX1 class at round five of the 2016 MX Nationals in Wanneroo, WA on May 29, ahead of Kawasaki's Matt Moss and Suzuki's Todd Waters.

Gibbs finished the day with 97pts across the three motos, with Moss and Waters on 86 followed by Kade Mosig (Kawasaki, 80) and Jesse Dobson (KTM, 80).

“It’s awesome to take the win here, and walk away with the points lead going in to the break,” Gibbs said. “I felt like towards the end of the second moto I found a few lines and I had a bit of confidence coming in to the final moto of the day.

“It was a shame to see Dean (Ferris) go down — you never want to see another rider get hurt, but I’m happy that I just stayed consistent and managed to ride to the track conditions.

“I knew that with the two guys coming back from Europe that they would be fast in the sand so it’s especially nice to walk away with a win here at Wanneroo.”

After winning motos one and two, Dean Ferris was rubbing shoulders with Gibbs at the start of the finale when he clipped the back of Gibbs' bike and hit the deck hard.

Ferris was transported to hospital and, after a battery of scans and tests, has been cleared of any serious issues around his head and neck and he has no long-term concerns. However, he will remain in Perth while further tests are carried out on his left wrist.

Ferris has now dropped to third in standings on  324pts, behind Gibbs (351) and Waters (334) and in front of Moss (314) and Mosig (267).

In MX2, Husqvarna-mounted Nathan Crawford won outright, and now leads the championship by 1pt over Jed Beaton.

The 2016 MX Nationals will continue in Nowra, NSW on July 3.
