Gibbs snaps Ferris' domination

The KTM rider has won round seven of the 2017 MX Nationals in Shepparton

KTM's Kirk Gibbs broke Dean Ferris’ six-round winning streak in the 2017 MX Nationals at Shepparton (Vic) on Sunday, July 16.

Gibbs went 1-2 in the two motos at round seven to claim his first overall of the season on 69pts ahead of Ferris (Yamaha, 59), Brett Metcalfe (Kawasaki, 58), Todd Waters (Honda, 56) and Kade Mosig (Yamaha, 54).

“It feels amazing to get this win," said Gibbs.

"Dean has been on a winning streak for a while now, so it’s nice to have finally broke through and hopefully I can carry this confidence into the last few rounds.

“It was a good day for me; obviously it helped that Dean made a mistake in the first moto but in the second race he schooled us all a bit.

“It was really cold down here and I’ve spent a lot of time in Sydney and Melbourne lately so I’m looking forward to heading home, thawing out, and getting back into my routine so I can finish this year off strong.”

After Ferris crashed in the opening moto and only finished in seventh, Gibbs won from Mosig, Metcalfe, Kyle Peters (Suzuki) and Waters.

In the second it was Ferris from Gibbs, Waters, Metcalfe and Nathan Crawford (Kawasaki).

Ferris leads the championship on 489pts from Gibbs (435) and Mosig (383).
