KTM’s Kirk Gibbs took round honours in the MX1 class at round nine of the 2014 Monster Energy MX Nationals in Gladstone (Qld) on Sunday, August 24.
Gibbs chalked up a second and a third from his two motos to finish 1pt ahead of Yamaha rider Billy Mackenzie (5-1), and another 1pt clear of Adam Monea (Kawasaki, 4-2) and Jacob Wright (Yamaha, 1-6). Matt Moss was next, another 2pts down, after 4-3 results.
But despite the win, Gibbs was only able to shave 3pts from Moss’ championship lead, with the gap now 37pts ahead of the final round in Coolum (Qld) next weekend (August 30-31).
"It feels good to get through the weekend, keep the red plate and enter the final round with the lead," Moss said. "The first moto was good, I got the holeshot but didn't ride as well as I wanted to and I just maintained what I needed to do.
"And then in moto two I got a terrible start outside the top 10 and had to make some passes to get back up there. I got a stomach cramp and backed it off, so I only lost 3pts in the championship, but as long as everything goes to plan at Coolum we should be right in there for the title."
In MX2, Husqvarna rider Luke Arbon (3-1) claimed his third outright win for the year, ahead of KTM’s Hamish Dobbyn (2-4) and Yamaha’s Jay Wilson (1-7). Clout leads the championship by 32pts (606 to 574) from Arbon, with Hamish Harwood (KTM) in third on 567.
