KTM's defending champion Kirk Gibbs has raced to his first round win of the 2016 MX Nationals in extremely tough conditions at the State Motorcycle Complex in Broadford, Vic on May 1.
After a wild night of storms, qualifying and Superpole were removed from the program in an effort to maintain some sort of track integrity, but it was always going to be a hard slog. And that it was, with Gibbs finishing first overall after his pair of second places ahead of championship leader Dean Ferris (Yamaha, 4-1), Todd Waters (Suzuki, 1-4) and Matt Moss (Kawasaki 3-3).
“Good and bad day for me in a lot of ways,” Ferris said. The first race wasn’t good and it took me far too long to adjust to the track and the difficult conditions. It wasn’t until the last three or four laps that I was able to work things out and understand what I needed to do.
“So, moto two was far better and the way I think I should ride. I was able to get to the front early and focus on what I needed to do and not by ducking and dodging roost. My lines were good and the bike worked well.
“Thank you to everyone at the CDR Yamaha team who worked so hard in trying conditions. The bike was bullet proof with thanks to the team keeping it in top shape all day."
Brett Metcalfe (Husqvarna) was fifth overall, ahead of Honda's Dylan Long.
Ferris now leads the championship by 1pt (190 to 189) from Gibbs, followed by Waters (182), Moss (177) and Metcalfe (165).
Round four will be held in Murray Bridge, SA on May 22.
