KTM's Kirk Gibbs once again found himself on the top step of the MX1 podium at round six of the 2015 MX Nationals in Raymond Terrace, NSW on Sunday, July 5.
Gibbs went 2-1 in the day's two motos to claim the overall from defending champion Matt Moss (Suzuki, 1-4) and Luke Styke (KTM, 3-2).
The second race was the highlight, with only a few bike lengths separating Gibbs, Styke, Daniel Reardon (Yamaha), Adam Monea (Kawasaki) at the 20-minute mark before Gibbs ultimately got the job done.
“It was a good day. It was actually awesome to have Matt (Moss) back, and have that battle in the first race,” said Gibbs. “I had a fair bit of bad luck here last year, so it’s good to now put that all behind me and take the overall.
“I really have to give it up to my team and the people around me — I feel very blessed to be in the position I’m in, and a lot of that is because of them.
“The plan is just to keep plugging away every week, keep making progress and fingers crossed I might even be able to wrap the championship up early."
Reardon and Monea were fourth and fifth overall at Raymond Terrace, while Gibbs now leads the championship by 60pts over Styke (411 to 351), followed by Monea on 334. Four rounds still remain.
In MX2, KTM's Caleb Ward claimed his third consecutive overall win, while Jay Wilson took over the championship lead from fellow Yamaha rider Luke Clout. Wilson Todd (Yamaha) was back to winning form in the MXD class.
