KTM Motocross Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs collected his first ever MX1 title as the 2015 MX Nationals wrapped up in Coolum, Qld on August 30.
Gibbs's third place in moto one behind Ben Townley (Penrite Honda) and his teammate Luke Styke was enough to give him champion-designate status with a race to spare, and with all the pressure off he was seventh in the season finale.
“It’s been such a long time coming, and it’s so hard to explain because you put so much time and effort into it, and this year has felt so long for me," said Gibbs. "I made sure a came out swinging this year, and had a really good pre-season, and that showed at round one when I took 1-1 results.
"Getting this championship is really unexplainable. When I had that injury a little doubt did enter my head, but we fought through and I’m just so happy that I was able to get this done. It’s an amazing feeling and to win an Australian motocross championship is a dream come true.
"I wouldn’t be here without the people who support me. It takes a massive team and it’s an amazing feeling having so many people believe in you, and I’m so happy to be able to finally repay them with a title.”
Adam Monea (NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki) won race two in Coolum, from Townley and Dylan Long (NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki).
Gibbs finished the 10-round championship on 647pts from Kade Mosig (CDR Yamaha, 586), Monea (577), Styke (577) and Lawson Bopping (Yamaha, 523).
Meantime JCR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson won the MX2 title from 2014 champion Luke Clout (Serco Yamaha) and Takeshi Katsuya (Kawasaki), and in MXD it was Wilson Todd (Yamaha) from Jayden Rykers (KTM) and Connor Tierney (KTM).
