Giancarlo Morbidelli, founder of the historic Italian motorcycle manufacturer bearing his surname, died on Monday February 10, in his home town of Pesaro.
Morbidelli started in the 1960s as a woodwork shop, with Giancarlo using a corner of the factory to work on his motorcycles. In just a few years, Giancarlo’s passion for motorcycling led him to become a serious player in the racing world.
The Morbidelli team won four World Championships between 1975 and 1977 with Paolo Pileri, Pier Bianchi and Mario Lega.
Eventually the brand became synonymous with technical innovation for motorcycles and 2-stroke engines.
A museum was established in the former Morbidelli factory in 1999 and includes around 350 motorcycles owned by Giancarlo from across the decades.
A selection of these motorcycles are set to be offered up at the Bonham’s’ Spring Stafford Sale auction on April 25-26, 2020. These bikes include a 1964 Ducati 125cc 4-cylinder Grand Prix machine that is estimated to go for nearly 600,000 pounds.
Giancarlo Morbidelli was 86 years old.
