Electric scooters are not exactly a new innovation, but it seems as though we're going to be seeing a lot more of them in the near future.
Yamaha launched its light weight (56kg) EC-03 in Japan earlier in the year, and we've even seen zero emissions scoots in Australia such as the ill-fated Vectrix.
What makes these two new electric scooters intriguing is that they're built by car makers – BMW and Mercedes-Benz – and will be launched at the Paris international motor show in October.
Mercedes new compact electric scooter (pictured) has not been named yet, though it will bear the company's micro car branding: smart. Powered by an electric motor energised by a lithium-ion battery pack, the smart e-scooter is expected to be first of a range of scooters for the German car brand.
Top speed for the smart e-scooter is not yet known.
Meanwhille BMW's iconic compact car brand, MINI, is also readying an electric scooter for the Paris motor show. Details are scarce, but we can expect the design to mimic some of the styling cues seen on the Mini Cooper compact car.
Like most electric scooters, the MINI electric scoot features a lithium-ion battery pack in lieu of a fuel tank, but far the plug-in MINI e-scooter will travel and at what speeds is not yet clear.
We'll have more news on the German electric scooter explosion later this month as the Paris motor show nears.
