Tech upgrade for BMW R 1250 RT

BMW Motorrad has lifted the cover off its 2021 BMW R 1250 RT tourer, the new machine boasting adaptive cruise control, a new multifunction TFT instrument cluster, and refreshed styling, among numerous other upgrades.

The revised model also gets a major equipment update, with previously optional features like Dynamic Traction Control, Full Integral ABS Pro (a Cornering ABS system that employs both brakes for enhanced stopping control), Dynamic Cruise Control and Active Cruise Control now standard.

Active Cruise Control and much more, as standard

First announced in late June, Active Cruise Control breaks new ground for motorcyclists in offering an adaptive cruise control system that allows the motorcycle to follow another vehicle at a set speed and distance. BMW says it's been able to apply the experience gained from its passenger car division to bring the technology to its motorcycles.

Locally delivered examples will also feature Riding Modes Pro as standard, allowing riders to tailor a variety of settings to their preference, the feature also including an 'engine drag torque control' to aid stability when coasting or downshifting.

Meanwhile a new Eco mode provides riders with a more fuel-efficient ride mode option.

While the BMW R 1250 RT powerplant – a 1254cc Boxer flat-twin with ShiftCam, producing a claimed 136hp at 7750rpm and 143Nm at 6250rpm – carries over, the 2021 iteration now comes with new instrumentation that allows satellite navigation mapping to be displayed within the bike's 10.25-inch TFT screen. BMW says it's a world first for motorcycles, and it means a second dedicated sat-nav display is no longer required.

The bike's styling has also come in for a revision, with a new front fairing now lower in overall height and enclosing the headlight, resulting in a wider field of vision for the rider and, says BMW, a more contemporary aesthetic.

The LED headlight now features an Adaptive Turning system to direct the beam through corners, while on the convenience front there's an upgraded audio system and a ventilated compartment – with inductive charging – for a smartphone.

Comprehensive update

"We have given the R 1250 RT a new look, a comprehensive increase in standard equipment and numerous technical upgrades to achieve a whole new riding experience," said RT Project Manager Harald Spagl.

"As a dynamic tourer with the incomparable BMW ShiftCam engine, it also has the perfect power unit with impressive power across the entire speed range."

The new BMW R 1250 RT will reach Australia in the second quarter of 2021 and will be available in four variants: RT, Elegance, Sport and Option 719. Local pricing will be announced in early 2021.
