GasGas presents its on-road spearhead

The Spanish firm has released a video detailing its first two modern-era road models, the SM 700 and ES 700

GasGas may have a relatively low profile here in Australia, but since the Spanish firm known largely for its trials and enduro bikes was acquired by KTM in 2019, it's been busily reinventing itself with a new-look line-up spanning a far wider range of applications.

And with its entry into the Moto3 Championship last year and Moto2 this year, it’s clear the brand is intent on branching out beyond the off-road sphere.

Underlining that intent is two new GasGas models that represent the brand’s spearhead into the on-road world, the SM 700 supermoto and ES 700 dual-purpose bike.

“Today we’re setting a new milestone, and we make no secret of the fact that stepping into asphalt is a big deal for GasGas,” says GasGas Brand Marketing Manager, Miguel Alcover.

“Because yes, we’re entering the street segment … and just like we did in the dirt, we’re here to establish ourselves, we’re here to stay, and we’re here to have some serious fun on the streets.”

Both Alcover and GasGas Product Marketing Manager, Gordon Vom Bauer, recently got together to present the two new models, and GasGas’s fresh direction, in a 15-minute video presentation, where they outline the brand’s history, its aspirations, and technical details of the new SM 700 and ES 700.

Shared platform

Sharing the same technological platform we’ve already seen in models such as the KTM 690 Enduro R and 690 SMC R, and Husqvarna 701 Enduro and 701 Supermoto, the SM 700 and ES 700 share the same 692.7cc four-valve single-cylinder engine – good for a claimed 74hp (55kW) at 8000rpm and 73.5Nm at 6500rpm – and chrom-moly steel trellis frame.

The shared components continue with a six-speed gearbox, Magura slipper clutch, and a fuel tank integrated within the polyamide rear subframe, as well as electronic smarts spanning two ride modes (Street/Supermoto or Off-road), lean-angle-sensitive traction control, and Bosch Cornering ABS.

The main differences, however, include the wheel set (black cast alloy rims for the SM 700, wire-spoked wheels for the ES 700), brakes (Brembo for both, but with upspec gear for the SM 700), and suspension, with the SM 700 scoring an WP Apex setup as opposed to the ES 700’s WP Xplor package.

Finally, the GasGas SM 700 comes with Continental ContiAttack tyres, while the ES 700 is shod with Continental TKC80 dual-purpose rubber.

Both bikes will launch with a full range of factory accessories, including performance parts, apparel and more. The 2023 GasGas SM 700 and 2023 GasGas ES 700 are expected to reach Australian dealerships in August 2022. See your nearest GasGas dealership for more information.
