Gardner and Campbell dominate Island Classic

Old rivals serve up a treat

January 27, 2009

Battle-hardened veterans Wayne Gardner and Malcolm Campbell upstaged their rivals to dominate the 2009 Island Classic at Phillip Island from January 23-25.

Gardner, the 1987 world 500 GP champion, won three of the four pulsating International Challenge races on his 1980 Honda CBR1100, and finished second in the other one behind the 1980 Suzuki RG560-mounted Campbell.

Campbell, a former Team Honda stalwart, was second overall behind Gardner in the International Challenge after battling a slew of mechanical problems early on, and he also left with a new lap record - a sizzling 1:41.953 set in race four. That's an average speed of 157km/h.

Add in the efforts of Scott Webster (1980 Kawasaki 1200), Robbie Phillis (1980 Suzuki GSX1100) and Karl Corpe (1980 Kawasaki Z1R1100), the huge crowd saw Australia dominate the International Challenge, piling on a staggering 1382pts, slaying the UK (732) and New Zealand (555).
