Honda's long-serving VTR250 has always been a great bike for learners. The torquey V-twin offered the flexibility of lively commuting and relaxed highway touring, while a balanced tubular frame brought both nimble handling and Ducati Monster-inspired good looks.
The VTR250 also captured the imagination of the crew at bikesales.com.au who last year built a customised version of the bike on this very site. Now, with a new project looming, the build-bike is up for sale, you guessed it, in our very own classifieds section. The subject of a year-long restoration/customisation, the VTR250 was rebuilt from the frame up. It's had a complete engine rebuild (having 26,116km on the odometer previously), new clutch and cable installed, all new bearings and bushes throughout and rolls on new Pirelli Sport Demon tyres with rebuilt twin-piston Nissin brakes with race-spec pads.
It currently runs a matt black reverse cone 'silencer' with dark grey heat-tape-wrapped pipes. Depending on the outcome of the RWC, it may be fitted with a baffle come sale time.
Cosmetic highlights include a custom-made single seat (with lockable under-seat storage and new lightweight lithium-ion battery), satin black powder-coated frame, swing arm, suspension componentry, kick stand and five-spoke wheels (with 90-degree black anodised valves), flat bars with black, round bar-end mirrors and black adjustable alloy short levers, aluminium/rubber cafe grips, micro analogue speedo, high-output 100mm headlight, Rizoma combination rear LED lights and front indicators, and an adjustable Rizoma number plate support bracket.
The lockable tank is painted in Hyundai paint colour 'Petrol Grey Matte' and finished with clear coat and a classic 70s Honda yellow decal on each side. The bespoke front mudguard replicates the colour of the tank.
We spent a little over $4500 on the build – not including the initial purchase – and given the asking price of standard VTR 250s we believe the asking price of $7690 is fair. The bike does put out a little more power than a standard VTR250, but remains within LAMS limitations. It is being sold with eight months' registration and a road worthy certificate. The bike has a clean title and is not under finance.
It was last serviced in December 2015 at Midlife Cycles, Richmond and had new spark plugs, fluids and filters installed in readiness for sale. Whoever buys this little beast will love it. It brings a grin to our face every time we ride it, and we're sure it will for its new owner too.
