Former world under 21 champion Max Fricke won the opening round of the 2019 Australian Solo Speedway Championship at Gillman (SA) on Thursday, January 3.
The Victorian defeated reigning Australian champion Rohan Tungate and 2012 world champion Chris Holder in the A final, while Jorden Stewart was excluded after crashing on lap one.
Holder took the hard route on to the podium after pulling up with bike problems in his opening heat.
He battled to 10 points from his remaining four to force his way into the B Final, before beating Aussie under 21 champion Jaimon Lidsey, Sam Masters and his brother Jack Holder to the last spot in the A final.
Lidsey and Masters made solid starts to their series with 10 points apiece. But it was a tough day for former champion Brady Kurtz and Aussie international Nick Morris, who missed the B Final cut on eight and seven points respectively.
Round two of five will be held in Mildura (Vic) on January 5, followed by the Bikesales-backed Undera (Vic) event on January 7, Wodonga (Vic) on January 9 and the finale in Kurri Kurri (NSW) on January 12.
