French motorcyclists have certainly had their fair share of issues with the legislature over the last 10 years, as Bikesales has often reported. Now a new frontier had emerged, this time over plans to ban pre-2000 motorcycles from major city centres.
Motorcyclists were out in force in 34 French towns and cities last weekend protesting against the laws, with the capital Paris the epicentre of the protest — understandably as those riders will be most affected.
Major demonstrations brought traffic to a standstill in major parts of the city, with a fair chunk of the riders on the "old" bikes. Paris' mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has sought to restrict the circulation of bikes registered before 2000 in major areas of the French capital between 8:00am and 8:00pm.
The effectiveness of such protests is always hard to ascertain, but the coalition of French motorcyclist which managed to mobilise such a large number of riders at short notice is an indication that they are prepared to dig in and fight yet another myopic policy.
