
Suzuki developed the Burgman Fuel-Cell scooter as a R&D initiative, first showing the model at the Tokyo motor show in 2009. Since then it has been undergoing road trials in the UK before becoming the first fuel-cell vehicle of any kind to earn Whole Vehicle Type Approval (in the EU) last March.
This feat that will allow Suzuki to popularise the model once hydrogen infrastructure is established, the city-friendly model featuring a compact, air-cooled fuel-cell and hydrogen tank within its frame.
The unit produced electricity which in turn drives a small electric motor, while at the same time emitting only water vapour.
The environmentally savvy scooter takes is a star attraction of Suzuki’s motorcycle stand at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, alongside the new GSR750 naked, a show version of the GSX-R1000 and a one-off concept built by Swiss firm Moto Virus dubbed URBAN-X-OVER. It uses the GSX-R1000 powerplant, and the show bike develops 182hp (136kW) and 117Nm.
